Most UK greenkeepers already have Syngenta’s GreenCast / Turf Advisor on their phone — and they should. It’s free, backed by decades of Syngenta R&D, and the disease forecasts, GDD calculator and Growth Potential tools are excellent. Pinly isn’t trying to replace it. Pinly is the operations layer that turns “Microdochium risk EXTREME tomorrow” into a scheduled spray, an inventory deduction and a finished compliance record by Friday.
14 features that matter for the buying decision — drawn from a public competitor research review. Honest “partial” and “no” marks where they apply, on both sides. GreenCast comes out ahead on regional surveillance, hardware integrations and pricing; Pinly wins the operational rows.
These aren’t reasons to drop Turf Advisor — keep it. They’re the things GreenCast was never built to do, and where Pinly takes the same agronomy intelligence and turns it into scheduled work, finished records and tracked stock.
GreenCast and Turf Advisor are explicitly an agronomy decision-support layer — Glenn Kirby (EAME Technical Manager and former course manager) leads the UK product, and Syngenta has wisely kept the scope tight. There’s no task manager, no crew app, no equipment management, no inventory, no compliance reporting, no budgeting and no attendance — that’s not a criticism, it’s the design. Pinly is the missing operations layer: drag-and-drop daily planning, a two-tap crew app, machinery hours and services, COSHH-aware spray records, chemical and fertiliser inventory with low-stock alerts, holiday and time-clock tracking, and budgets that compare actual against target. None of that overlaps with GreenCast — you keep both.
GreenCast tells you the disease risk. That’s genuinely valuable, and the underlying science — Smith-Kerns 2018 for Dollar Spot, microdochium patch, anthracnose, grey leaf spot — is published, peer-reviewed turf science the whole industry uses. Pinly implements nine models inside the operations product (Smith-Kerns 2018 Dollar Spot and a Dwyer 2017-based Microdochium model that overlap with GreenCast, plus Fidanza 1996 Brown Patch, Nutter 1983 Pythium, Anthracnose, Red Thread, Drechslera, Take-All and Pythium Root Rot that GreenCast doesn’t list), then closes the loop: the morning the model flags “Microdochium risk EXTREME”, Pinly schedules the spray, assigns it to a crew member, and the moment they tap “done” on their phone the application record is written with weather, PPE, products and buffer zones, and the fungicide is deducted from your stock. GreenCast was never built to do that — and Pinly only matters because GreenCast-style intelligence has somewhere to land.
Every morning at 4:30 AM, Pinly reviews tomorrow’s weather, turf-growth forecast, disease risk, staff availability and your standing instructions — then generates a full daily schedule with a plain-English reason next to every task. The disease inputs are the same peer-reviewed models GreenCast surfaces (Smith-Kerns, Microdochium); the difference is that Pinly uses them to drive the plan, not just to inform it. We’re not the only AI claim in the category — GreenSight TurfCloud and the GreenKeeper App have similar pitches — but Pinly’s planner is conditioned on integrated disease and Growth Potential models, weather, and persistent operator instructions, learning over time.
A comparison page that only flatters its own product isn’t worth reading. Three places GreenCast / Turf Advisor has a real, current advantage Pinly doesn’t match.
GreenCast and Turf Advisor are free, backed by one of the world's largest agrochemical companies, with a continuous R&D pipeline. Glenn Kirby (EAME Technical Manager and a former course manager) leads the UK product, which means a real turf practitioner is shipping the roadmap. For free agronomic intelligence on every greenkeeper's phone, it's hard to beat - and we don't try.
Turf Advisor publishes a Google Maps overlay showing live and 5-day-forecast disease pressure across the UK, drawn from Syngenta's weather network. That regional surveillance view - 'is anything happening in Scotland this morning?' - is the kind of thing only an agrochemical company at Syngenta's scale can produce. Pinly forecasts at the course level only.
GreenCast Connect (the cross-region mobile app launched 2024-25) integrates with Spiio in-ground soil sensors - moisture, temperature, salinity, light - and surfaces native NDVI satellite imagery. Sensor and satellite integrations are on Pinly's roadmap but aren't shipped as of May 2026. If you've already invested in Spiio, GreenCast Connect is the right place to view that data today.
